Why “Boots Theory”

In Terry Pratchett's Men at Arms, Captain Vimes explains why the rich stay rich: a good pair of boots costs fifty dollars and lasts ten years, a cheap pair costs ten dollars and lasts a season. The poor man buys the cheap pair again and again, spends more over a decade, and still has wet feet. That is the Boots Theory of socioeconomic unfairness.

This blog is about buying the good boots once. It looks at the tools, apps and habits people use to manage money, tests them against real prices and real numbers, and says plainly whether they are worth it.
